Geo-information

From valuable data to a service network

Geographic information is data with spatial orientation and is called geo-information. It describes the situation and characteristics of a country in terms of coordinates, placenames, postal addresses and other criteria. In the worlds of administration, economy, science and in the private sector they build the basis for processes, planning, measures and decision-making of all types.

Between 60 to 80 percent of all political, economic and private decisions are space oriented. In everyday life, almost everyone uses geo-information regularly, often without even being aware of it.

Geo-information is an essential requirement for a well-functioning democracy, for transparent and comprehensible decision-making by including the public in important political matters as well as for social development. As a key element of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure, its significance is comparable to transportation and communications networks or the nationwide supply of energy and water in a modern state.

In the business world geo-information is essential for realizing the most varied plans and in decision-making, e.g. in product design, marketing, logistics and distribution, for investment decisions or the choice of location. Considering the enormous political and economic potential, geo-information is a first-class economic asset.
